FAQs
Please find below the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about Mavern House. If you can’t find the information you are looking for, or would like any further information, please contact us to find out more. We would love to hear from you.
Q. What is the Eden Alternative philosophy of care?
The Eden Alternative is a global ‘care philosophy’ developed by Dr Bill Thomas of the US in the 90’s, who, as a consulting New York Geriatrician, became determined to address Care Home Residents’ feelings of loneliness, helplessness and boredom as he saw them.
It is an internationally recognised care standard, which places human growth at the core, enabling residents to be far more than a set of physical symptoms - as in the traditional medical model of elderly care.

Q. What are the bedrooms like?
Our homely bedrooms have everything you might need but we support and we encourage you to personalise your own space and create a room that reflects who you are and one that you will feel totally at home in.
The vast majority of the rooms are en-suite.
Q: What is the food like?
Delicious and nutritious meals are home cooked onsite by our in-house chef using fresh healthy ingredients and many treats and snacks are available too. We create our exciting menus based on our residents’ preferences. However, if residents fancy something specific, which is not on the menu that day, we are more than happy to cook it for them. There’s also a huge choice of alternatives made available every day.
We cater for all needs and specialist diets.
Q: How will I pass my day at Mavern House?
Various entertainment and enrichment activities are organised to ensure there is always something interesting and stimulating going on. These include board games, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, discussion groups, film club, reading group, storytelling and reminiscence, icing cakes, making jam, going for a walk. Our community choir also gives several performances each year.
We also value relationships very highly so you can interact with others or simply watch and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere.
Q: Can I bring my pet?
We can accommodate pets in some cases, please discuss this further with our Home Manager.
Q: What type of care do you offer?
At Mavern House we provide Residential, Dementia, Nursing, Respite or rehabilitation and end of life care.
We regularly assess the care we are providing and ensure that it is tailored to residents’ current needs and requirements and should the care requirements change, it’s no problem!
Q: How will you help me to settle in?
Our experienced team is passionate about welcoming and integrating each resident to their new home, and we will take as much time as you need to help you do so.
When residents join Mavern House, we will listen and document how they would like their daily life to be in a Personal Care Plan with contributions from family and loved ones.
This plan will be regularly reviewed which provides the opportunity to make changes and improvements as necessary. This way we can be sure we are getting this right.
Residents are encouraged to bring personal items, such as photographs, ornaments, etc. to make their room truly their own.
